The Benefits of Swimming
Swimming is an enjoyable and beneficial exercise for seniors of any age. There a four-basic forms of water exercises to participate in:
#1 WATER AEROBICS
Usually offered at gyms or fitness centers. Classes in water walking or water dancing, exercises that resemble the on-land classes.
#2 BASIC SWIMMING
One of the most beneficial forms of exercises for seniors. If your skill is low, sign up for a class. Keep at it until you can swim non-stop for 30 minutes.
#3 WATER RESISTANCE EXERCISES
A low impact form of weight training. Arm curl, calf raises and leg swings, all while in the pool.
#4 WATER RELAXATION EXERCISES
Assists with lowering heart rate, blood pressure, and stress. Aqua Yoga or Pilates are two common forms of water relaxation classes.
Three final notes, number-one visit with your health-care provider to make sure you are healthy enough for theses exercises. Number-two, check with your local recreation department to find and when these classes are offered. Finally, number-three, once you start, keep at it!
