Define Your Priorities
Your priorities are the most important part of getting a true handle on time management. When you’re handling the tasks that directly feed into those priorities, then the important stuff is what is getting done. If tasks don’t line up with those priorities, you can get to them when you get to them. As a caregiver, your priorities might be a little more rigidly defined than they’ve been in the past.
Take Big Goals and Break Them Down
Big goals are definitely admirable and everyone should have them. The problem is that if you’re not getting any traction on those goals at all, you’re going to feel frustrated more often than not. It’s time to break down those large goals into smaller chunks. You do that so that you can actually start making progress. Giving yourself deadlines on each of those chunks can help you to make sure that you don’t let the new smaller goals just sit there, too.
Take Everything One Step at a Time
Smaller chunks of those big goals and tasks are things you can actually start plugging into your daily schedule. You might not get all of your big goal out of the way, but you’re getting tiny steps closer to being able to say you’re getting there. This is also why it’s important to periodically review your progress, so that you can see what you’re actually getting done.
It’s Definitely Possible to Say Yes to Too Much
Committing to too much is going to be a huge way that you sabotage your own time management. Take a deep breath before you agree to something and truly think about whether it lines up with your priorities. After that, even if it does line up with your priorities, think about whether you legitimately have time to handle that task. If the answer is no to both, you need to say no.
