Fears of Aging
The Day Star of Seattle polled seniors in the West Seattle area. The question asked was what are your greatest fears as you age. Below are the responses in order of ranking;
#1 Loss of Independence – someone taking control and making my decisions
#2 Loss of Memory – Dementia, not being able to recognize friends and family
#3 Safety and Security – I can’t defend myself
#4 Fear of Falling – Severe injury, long healing process in care center and not getting out
#5 Declining Health – loss of independence, rising medical bills, not getting out of a care center
#6 Lack of Money – Unable to bills, loss of home, embarrassment
#7 Loss of Familiar Environment – my comfort zone changing with loss of friends and family or family moving away
#8 Not Being Able to Drive – loosing my freedom and self-sufficiency
#9 Loss of Personal Dignity – loosing my ability to walk and or unable to control some of my bodily functions and the embarrassment that it causes
#10 Lose of a Spouse – the loneliness and emptiness I will feel
